Time For Truth
The roof needed repair. As I made my way up onto the house, I noticed that the area right below me was over my daughter's bedroom. Her window must have been opened as I could hear her loud and clear talking to someone on the phone. I couldn't help but hear the conversation.
"Yeah Betty, he doesn't suspect a thing. I've pulled the wool over his eyes before, but this time I have outdone myself."
"No, really Betty, he is oblivous to everything. We can leave early Monday morning and he won't even notice I'm gone until it is too late. Won't he be shocked. He keeps me on such a short leash."
I grew more interested. What was my daughter keeping from me? Where was she going on Monday?
"Okay, Betty. By the way, I'll bring everything by your house today. I'll show him he hasn't kept as close an eye on me as he thinks."
Have I been an ogre? Why is she talking this way about me? She's running away, I need to get off this roof and confront her now!
I climbed down off the roof and headed straight for my daughter's bedroom. I'll confront her now so she has no choice but to reveal all her plans of leaving.
I walked up to my daughter's door and knocked.
"Come in."
I opened the door and looked at her with a stern look on my face. I could see she was caught off guard.
"I know what you're up to."
"You do?"
"Yes, and I want you to know that I won't permit it."
"But dad..."
"No, I just can't permit it. You are my only daughter and I won't allow you to do this thing."
"But it's all planned out."
"I don't care, I won't permit it."
"Please dad, Betty is going to help me and she is expecting me over her house."
"Your not going anywhere. You are grounded, do you hear me?"
"But dad, I've been planning this for such a long time."
"Oh, really?"
"Yes. About five months now."
"Well, if I have anything to say about it, your little plan of running away will not stand."
"Running away?"
"Yes, I overheard your conversation with Betty. I was on the roof just now."
"Oh dad, I'm not running away. My boyfriend's birthday is coming up and I'm throwing him a surprise party. We are together so much of the time, that he thinks he knows everything I do. He'll be surprised when he finds out that I planned and executed this party almost right under his very nose."
"Oh my goodness. I'm so sorry. I guess this is one of those times a parent should just have trusted their child. I should not have accused you so quickly."
"It's all right dad. It's nice to know you still want me around. I guess I haven't yet worn out my welcome here, huh?"
"Not for a few years yet."
