Time For Truth

This particular Scripture is so misused I almost don't want to have to explain it as it means nothing like what people think it does. This Scripture is actually the conclusion of Church government and how it is supposed to operate.

Jesus did not want us to be ignorant of how the Church government was to operate so He laid down some guidelines. He begins His guidelines by telling His followers what to do in a particular instance when a brother in the Lord has offended you habitually and refuses to listen to rebuke by you.

Jesus says that the offended party is to take along with him two other witnesses to speak to the offender. If this does not work, Jesus instructs the offended party to tell it to the elders.

If after the elders rebuke the offender he still refuses to listen to sound reason and doctrine, the offended party is told to tell the whole Church. If the offender refuses to listen even to the whole Church, Jesus tells them to cast him out of the Church (excommunicate him).

Jesus concludes this by saying, "For where two or more are gathered in My name there am I in their midst." In other words Jesus is giving Old Testament doctrine to His followers. In Deuteronomy, Moses is instructed to set up judges to listen to disputes and offenses. God promises to be in their midst as they judge offenders so as to carry out the sentences handed down against the offenders. This Scripture has nothing to do with praying and making God do what you are asking Him to do for you in the sense of a blessing.
